This year’s edition also continues the story of visual peacemaking. What is visual peacemaking? In the work of peacemaking one of the first steps is beginning to see other people as God sees them, or to see them with eyes of compassion in their own context. Too often we are guilty of “othering”, increasing distance from people of another group merely by our bias, suspicion, or prejudice. In contrast, the work of “visual peacemaking” is the work of depicting our common humanity that can challenge our negative stereotypes and build bridges of understanding. We need to see the other as part of God’s larger humanity. The apostle Paul showed us this attitude in his prayer for the Gentile Christians (IOW non Jewish or those NOT like the early Christians) in Ephesus: “For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth derives its name.” (Eph. 2:14).
