My heart was moved (and tears shed) by our meeting today with Congressman Dave Reichert of the 8th Congressional district of my wonderful state of Washington. We sat together (Muslim, Mormon, Jewish and Christian leaders) and joined in a positive discussion about the need for peace in Israel/Palestine. We recognized our common concern for those who suffer in the conflict, on both sides. Our congressman committed to meet again, to forming an action group together WITH him to foster a grassroots movement for peace, and for meeting humanitarian needs on the ground in the Holy Land. My faith in our political system was given hope today.
Nobody even mentioned our individual political party affiliation. I know we’re spread across the spectrum but our agenda was shared compassion for those who suffer. And we all are motivated by our faith and religious values. Oh…and one of our group canceled a meeting with Steve Ballmer to join this one. He said this meeting was MORE important.
Together we began to build trust today. But we want more than a photo opp or warm feelings for having met together. We want justice for those who need it. Stay tuned. We believe in action and leadership. We’re all activists of some sort in this group. Pray for us all. Pray for true peace in the Holy Land.
